Tape hair extensions should be fêted as the ‘girl’s best
friend’ of hair attachments: they’re easy to apply and if you buy a quality
brand they are also very good looking and hard to detect, especially if you buy
real hair rather than synthetics.

Here is an example of tape hair extensions |
Tape hair extensions are a simple way to add body or length
to your hair. If applied properly they should not only be invisible but should
last for around six to eight weeks. They are probably the simplest example of
hair extension but for the first time it is advisable to visit an experienced hair
consultant.
There are a few simple rules you need to follow if you are
looking for long term quality results:
1.
As with everything, if you want to look good,
buy the best you can afford. The expression ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ really
applies here. If you’ve never done it before, go to a professional hair specialist
who can advise you on colour, length and the proper maintenance regime.
2.
You must leave at least 48 hours between
applying the extensions and washing your hair for the first time, after all the
glue needs to set properly. When you do wash your hair the cardinal rule is ‘less
is more’ - so if you are in the habit of washing your natural hair every day
you need to drop this down to say twice a week at most.
3.
Dry shampoo is your new best friend. It will
give your hair the body you are looking to achieve by washing. Very
importantly, do NOT use conditioner anywhere near your tape hair extensions! If
you do use a conditioning product it acts as a lubricant and you will find your
tape hair extensions simply slide off. Many people blame ‘faulty’ hair
extensions when they have problems, but the simple truth is that proper
maintenance will prevent 99% of all problems you hear about from others.
4.
Before placing your tape hair extensions, think
about the way you will be styling your hair. For example, if you are going to
make a pony tail, make sure you place the tape hair extensions properly and at
the right angle so the action of putting up your hair does not expose them or
leave a conspicuous indentation in the smooth surface of your hair.
5.
At all costs, avoid tangles. Be gentle and use a
proper detangling hairbrush - they are designed to help you avoid the one thing
that will ruin your tape extension. In conjunction with this, let your hair air
dry as much as possible and apply a small amount of conditioner (a leave-in
product) to the bottom 1/3 of your hair.
6.
When you go to bed, if you have long extensions
remember to put your hair into a loose pony tail or braid - this will prevent ‘bed
head’.
Above all else, using tape hair extensions should be fun.
You are doing it for a reason, whether to look good for someone, dress up for a
special occasion, or simply because you want to. In the end, don’t lose your
sense of humour, follow the instructions and enjoy yourself.
