Home-Made Hair Extensions – Really?

Among all the film clips and video blogs on YouTube I have watched I never expected to stumble across one that offered a tutorial in how to save money by making home-made hair extensions. Actually, I assumed it was a student prank set up for Fresher’s Week or somesuch. Boy, was I wrong.

A rather earnest young lady (let’s call her Shirley to save her blushes) explained that rather than risking buying hair extensions over the Internet she preferred to visit a professional salon and take the advice of the consultant to help her decide on the best colour match for her natural hair and the best hair clips to use.

Using her admittedly rather nifty sewing skills Shirley then set about creating her own extensions.
First she measured the back of her head and then roughly estimated how much extension she needed and then doubled the length to ensure a lovely thick effect. Then she sewed the tape ends of the doubled over hair to each other. The next step involved sewing the hair clips in place – one each side of the extension and one in the middle, so three in total were deemed appropriate to hold the extension in place on her own hair. Then essentially repeat the process until you have the desired number of extensions. Voilà- home-made hair extensions!

Most disappointingly I thought Shirley did not show us how she managed to fit the extensions onto her own hair – who knows, perhaps a camera-shy friend popped in to help.

I can only suggest that in life you can be too cheap. Perhaps a neater sewing job was necessary along with smaller hair clips. Alternatively professionally built micro link weft extensions might be a better option anyway. In my humble opinion the finished product in this case looked more like a grass skirt worn to a fancy dress party than a professional hair extension.

The moral of the story is to put down that sewing needle, move away from your scissors and book a consultation with your local hair extension professional such as Miss20, who can guide you in selecting the solution that fits both your hair style, colouring and budget. If not, you may be in danger of splitting your sides laughing – in which case Shirley’s sewing skills really would come in rather handy!
